Doom soul. That’s the term Al Spx uses to describe her style. While the “doom” is a little off-putting at first, through crisp, honest vocals, Cold Specks manages to makes doom sound like it gently blossoms, instead of being an impending burden.
The 23-year old Etobicoke native (and her ten piece band), is now repping Canada over in the UK and giving us a wonderful image. Cold Specks debut album, I Predict A Graceful Expulsion, was released mid-2012 and was nominated for a Polaris Prize among artists like Feist and Kathleen Edwards. I repeat: she’s 23 and this was her first album. I think it’s safe to say we can expect big things from Spx.
One more thing – I’m about to make your day. As if it’s not enough that Stars will be playing Sydenham Church on March 18th, but Cold Specks will be opening the show. Best. Concert. Ever.
