There is no way around it “Fishes” is a pop song albeit a great one but a pop song nonetheless. I’m not ashamed to admit that I like pop music. Many a times I have gotten drunk off the intoxicating tunes of FUN., Ellie Goulding and Miley Cyrus…But that was only once, okay, maybe twice. But it was with a friend. In any event it’s hard to deny the killer combination of a great hook and a danceable beat. The boisterous hand clapping and Mover’s powerful vocals only make it better.
I need to be careful though because it is not my intention to compare Emilie Mover to Miley Cyrus. Although “Fishes” and “Wrecking Ball” are equally catchy there is a level of sophistication and cleverness present here. A level that a song from an album with a purposefully misspelled title, a Z replaces what should have been an S in Miley’s Bangerz, just cannot breech. Mover’s poetic lyrics and the crystal-esque quality of her voice make her more akin to Amy Milan of Stars. Amy Milan is the undisputed Queen of pop, in the indie-pop realm anyway. But Milan has been in the biz a bit longer than Mover and things can change.
