Is it possible to still be rock and roll without being a throw-back, nostalgic, classic rock-type band (a la the Sheepdogs)? I don’t have a definitive answer, but as far as I’m concerned, Toronto’s Teenage Kicks are straight up rock and roll. It feels classic but not classic rock, a modern take on a familiar scenario that feels just fresh enough to work.

With smooth-as-butter guitar tone filling in the top end, and a classic but tight rhythm section holding down the low side of things, the stage is set for frontman Peter Van Helvoort to lay down howls and purrs in equal amounts. “Middle of the Night” is off their self-produced EP Be On My Side, which is a quick affair that thoroughly entertains throughout its six-song run time.

Teenage Kicks put on a great live act and are playing a few shows in the GTA in the next couple of weeks. If you want throw back but still feel like you’re moving forward, these are your guys.
