Allen Stone’s self titled album is the best soul album I have heard in a very long time. The whole thing is full of great tunes. That being said, Allen Stone performing live is ALWAYS superior to any of his and his band’s recordings. This is one of the best live performances I’ve ever heard, let alone the best version of this song.
The song starts out with a three chord structure and sticks with it until the bridge, where a phenomenal key change happens, along with an incredibly fitting keyboard solo. The song, for the most part, is the same three chord structure that’s played in the intro. That sounds like it’s repetitive, but it isn’t. The entire band brings little nuances to each verse and chorus keeping the song fresh and interesting. At one point the bridge comes in and it’s the perfect transition to a amazing vocal explosion from Allen Stone. I get chills every time I hear it.
Watch out for Allen Stone in the future. He’s already recorded two incredible albums, and if he continues his current trend of improving from album-to-album, then I can’t wait till the next release. If you like soul music or you’re looking for a solid album in general, get Allen Stone. If you’re looking for great musicianship, see Allen Stone live the first chance you get.
