I had never come across Coconut Records until a few days ago when a friend of mine mentioned them to me, and although the song was released in 2007 I’m hoping there are a few of you hearing this for the first time.
“West Coast” has that optimistic yet totally chill sound that can only come out of California. Jason Schwartzman has a really cool voice; it sounds honest and whimsical. The whole album Nighttiming has a sense of erratic charm comparable to a Wes Anderson film, which may or may not be coincidental as Jason Schwartzman is an actor with hilarious roles in quite a few Wes Anderson films. And, by writing this post, I now have a whole new appreciation and love for Coconut Records.
If you were plugged into the music scene in 2007 and not living under a rock (or listening to an unhealthy amount of Blink 182 and Jack’s Mannequin) like I was, I hope you can forgive me for this way back-play back. If you still want something new and Jason Schwartzman related then watch the NEW Wes Anderson film, Moonrise Kingdom.
